Durban III not welcomed in New York

It is not everyday that state and/or city governments take on situations that are national in scope; however, I am proud that my local city councilman Lew Fidler has taken on such an important issue. On April 6, 2011, Councilman Lew Fidler introduced Res. 762 (click here to read the the full resolution) which, as states in the title is a "Resolution calling upon the United Nations to either cancel or relocate the Durban III conference, currently scheduled to convene in New York City in September, 2011 and if the conference does occur calling upon President Obama to boycott it and for the City to afford it no accommodation other than that which is necessary to protect the public." As of this writing, the resolution is in committee (click here to see the progress of this resolution).

Make sure to not only call to thank Coucilman Fidler, but I ask my fellow New Yorkers to call their State Senators and Assembly members to ask them to act against this forum for anti-Semitism (for those of you who do not know about why this conference should not welcomed in New York, click here to read about the "Durban II" conference). Protecting yourself from Anti-Semitism in the classroom

Confronting hate is no easy task. More so even when it is in the classroom; however, I hope the following information would make it easier to confront a professor who clearly is abusing his/her power to indoctrinate, not to educate. Now, it may be intimidating to confront professor's like Norman Finkelstein and Noam Chomsky, but keep in mind that not only will your Hillel or local Jewish organization stand behind you, but the American government.

According to a document written by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), if schools do not take action to correct actions against Jewish students, these schools will be in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, color or national origin. While it does not add "religion" to the group that is protected, in a letter (see here) written by then director of the OCR Kenneth Marcus in 2004 and reaffirmed as policy in 2010 under the Obama administration, discrimination against religious groups are added to this protection as stated in the letter that "groups that face discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics may not be denied protection under Title VI on the ground that they also share a common faith."

Now, what does this mean to you the students? Some of you may remember this ugly incident at UC Irvine a year ago:

Well the students known as the "Irvine 11" were arrested and were charged with "with misdemeanor conspiracy to commit a crime and misdemeanor disruption of a meeting." They have pleaded not guilty to these charges (see here). Also, UC Irvine is being investigated by the OCR for anti-Semitism (see here) for events such as this and other examples of anti-Semitism at UC Irvine (see the letter of complaint to the OCR here).

So don't be afraid. If there is anti-Semitism, or racism going on in the classroom, don't be afraid to speak up. You have the right to an education, not an indoctrination.

Hate doesn't happen

Hate isn't simple. No one person is born hating from the womb. They are taught to hate by the environment around them. Whether it's their parents, their school, or even in media, hate just doesn't happen.

So I ask those of you alleged "freedom lovers" who stand with the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, of Hamas, of Hezbollah the following question: After seeing these videos, would you want your family to see and hear those words and images?

To those of you on college campuses and part of Palestine Clubs or clubs that promote peace but stand with groups and organizations like those mentioned above, why would you even consider standing with them?

I want to be clear, I want peace. But if peace is going to grow in the Middle East towards Israel, it will have less to do with the Jewish State and more about the mindset towards Jews in general. Hopefully, with the recent upheaval in Arab countries and more young people wanting freedom in their countries, we will one day we closer to building bridges towards peace instead of bombs.

Goldstone report reconsidered

In this past Friday's Washington Post (click here), Richard Goldstone, the author and chairperson of the report, wrote that if he knew what we know now then, then the report would be a lot different towards Israel.

With Israel "Apartheid" week coming and going to campuses around the world, it is time for those Pro-Israel activists to come together to remind the world what it means to be pro-Israel: it means pro-peace. Yes, Israel is not a perfect country. Ask any Israeli. I promise you no one Israeli will have the same response on what is right or wrong with Israel. But, that is how democracy works. But, Israel has and always stood up for peace. Israel has always stood with it's ally, the United States, waiting for someone to come through that door and discuss peace. It wasn't Arafat, he decided long before Camp David in 2000 that he wanted war. It is not anyone currently in the Palestinian Authority, as they continue to promote the murder of innocent civilians (see here and here).

Yet, Palestinian clubs and other far left wing clubs/organizations have the audacity to blame Israel for apartheid?! Watch the video below and you tell me (courtesy of StandWithUs).

Why no to peace?

While Palestinian Clubs across college campuses fan the flames of hate against Israel and the Jewish State, they refuse to hold the Palestinian Authority accountable for any violations and abuse of their own people.

Why don't they care about women's rights in the Muslim world?

Why do they not care about what is being taught to future generations?

Explain to me, why is it that you chose to fan the flames of hate, of bigotry, or lies, and anti-Semitism? Why don't you want peace?

Hopefully, one day, we can share in a reality of real peace.

8 Reasons Leftists Should be Pro-Israel

Israel continues to be the demon poster-child of the Left. The prime example of a repressive regime and abuser of human rights. On the Left, people became outraged and agitated over Israel more than over any other cause. Israel's supposed villainy will bring out protestors on cold, rainy days in a way no other issue can. Many of these people are earnest, but perhaps misled.

In most ways, my own politics tend to be Liberal-Left: I support single-payer, universal healthcare, I opposed the war in Iraq and the Bush-Cheney "imperial presidency," I even voted twice for Ralph Nader. However, like French philosopher Bernard Henri-Lévy, I differ on Israel and reject the demonization of Israel, whether at the United Nations, in the world media, or among American and European Leftists.

If my fellow Leftists or even Liberals think that the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement will help bring an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as peace to the Middle East and harmony to the community of nations, they are sadly mistaken. There is a difference between criticism and demonization, and the campaign against Israel is of the latter type. Criticism, and there is much of it within Israel's own healthy democracy, can result in positive change. But the focused attempt to demonize Israel, not undertaken against any other nation, is aimed at delegitimizing Israel and undermining its very existence, as if the problems of the world were the fault of the Israelis -- the fault of the Jews -- and if they would only go away, all would be better.

Not only is this a sorry illusion, but this concerted assault on Israel itself betrays the principles of the Left.

Here, then, are 8 reasons Leftists should be Pro-Israel (or, at least, Pro-Peace rather than Anti-Israel):

1. Human Rights. The Left fights for human rights in the world. Even if one thinks Israel or its soldiers guilty of human rights violations (and I am not willing at the outset to grant this point), there is no international or historical comparison that could reasonably rank Israel among the worst criminals of the world or of history. Whether we look at the scale of the conflict, the numbers of lives lost, or the treatment of the press or of dissidents, there are far too many examples of bloodshed and persecution dwarfing anything done by Israel against the Palestinians over the last four decades since the Six Day War, when Israel was attacked by its neighbors. Even Arab treatment of Palestinians, such as in Jordan's Black September massacre, caused thousands of deaths, possibly more in 10 days than in four decades of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And how can we compare Israel to Mugabe's Zimbabwe, or the Chinese crackdown on Tibet and Tianneman? Or the disappearances and death squads of Latin America Square or the killing fields of Pol Pot? Let alone the genocide pursued by Hitler or Stalin's murderous reign? Let us be clear: genocide is the attempt to exterminate an entire people and culture; this is not what has happened to the Palestinians, and it is not the goal of Israeli policy. By contrast, the explicit aim of Hamas is to eliminate Israel. So, if we support human rights and oppose persecution, ought we not first to focus our efforts on the places where we find the worst situations? Can anyone rationally claim that among these places, let alone the most horrendous of all, is a small nation on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea?

2. Internationalism. Leftists tend to support internationalism. One would think that the United Nations would be the world body most dedicated to furthering this aim. But how is it that Israel, this small nation, has become such a central concern? From 2003-2010, there have been more than 900 human rights actions against Israel at the U.N.; the next closest is Sudan at just under 400. Israel is the only member of the U.N. to be excluded from any of the five regional groups. And should not all on the Left oppose the absurdity of the so-called Human Rights Council, whose members include such paragons of humanitarianism as China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Kyrgyzstan? How can Leftists stand silent when the Turkish Prime Minister denounces Israel for human rights crimes while then promising that the Kurds will "drown in their own blood," in a conflict with human rights abuses on both sides and tens of thousands individuals killed? If Gaza is not the ideal place to live, if the Gazans are suffering, nevertheless the photos in the New York Times and elsewhere and the testimony of reporters clearly demonstrate that Gazans are not starving, their store shelves are not empty, whether for food or consumer goods; as difficult as the situation may be, it is simply not the pinnacle of human rights disasters, and Israel is thus not deserving of international condemnation above all other nations in the world.

3. Peace. Leftists want peace. In the Middle East and elsewhere. The polls make clear that, overwhelmingly, Israelis desire peace with their neighbors; the difficult sacrifices, including the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza make this evident. Israelis are prepared for a secure, two-state solution, to live side-by-side in peace. Meanwhile, the stated goal of its enemies is to end its existence. A simple thought-experiment should make the matter starkly clear: If tomorrow Hamas and other Palestinian groups unilaterally put down their weapons, what would follow? Peace. If Israelis unilaterally put down their weapons, what would follow? Millions of dead or exiled Jews. Anyone on the Left who does not recognize this is living in denial. Leftists should support peace and not live in denial.

4. Anti-Authoritarianism. Leftists oppose authoritarianism and dictatorship and instead support popular, democratic rule. Israel maintains a vibrant, parliamentary democracy, with a broad range of views represented, much more so than in the United States, for example. Indeed, Arabs parties and Communists have long had representatives voted into the Israeli Knesset. Can we imagine such representation, as well as the freedom of assembly and freedom of speech in Israel's Arab neighbors? In the Gaza ruled by Hamas? In Egypt or Syria or Saudi Arabia? By opposing Israel and supporting groups like Hamas, the Left is not supporting a liberation struggle but rather the effort to replace the Middle East's only democracy with yet another repressive dictatorship. Do Leftists really desire such an outcome? How can the one major effort to boycott, divest, and sanction be aimed at a democratic nation like this? As Bernard Henri-Levy has written at the Huffington Post of the "Confusion of an era when we combat democracies as though they were dictatorships or fascist States. This maelstrom of hatred and madness is about Israel. But it also concerns, as we should be well aware, some of the most precious things established in the movement of ideas in the last thirty years, especially on the left, and these are thus imperiled."

5. Human Dignity and Equality. The Left fights for the values of dignity and equality. Are these traits exemplified more by Israel or its neighbors? Look at how much Israelis value the life of a single soldier, in the willingness to trade hundreds of prisoners for one soldier, and even to trade prisoners to recover their dead for proper burial. Look at the rules of engagement of the Israeli Defense Forces, at how the IDF calls and leaflets civilians to warn them; does any other military do such a thing? In terms of equality and human rights, compare the state of women's and gay and lesbian rights in Israel with that in the rest of the Middle East. And in terms of human dignity, do people on the Left think so little of Palestinian dignity that they are willing to claim Palestinians have "no choice" but to turn themselves into homicidal-suicidal bombers to kill Israeli children? Can we not expect more of people? Treating Palestinians like helpless victims does less than recognize their human dignity.

6. Anti-Discrimination. Leftists oppose sexism, racism, and any similar sort of discrimination. And so, Leftists do or ought to oppose anti-Semitism in the same way. And yet, Leftists too often give a pass to anti-Semitism masked as anti-Zionism or anti-Israel sentiment. The playwright David Mamet has written in the Huffington Post as follows: "Yet most of the Western Press, European and American, pictures Israel as, somehow the aggressor, and the Israelis as somehow inhuman, and delighting in blood." As Mamet has elaborated in his book The Wicked Son: Anti-Semitism, Self-Hatred, and the Jews, this is nothing less than a reworking of the old Blood Libel against the Jews--except this time, instead of being accused of using non-Jewish blood to bake matzah, the Jews are accused of spilling blood for no reason other than gratuitous pleasure. Leftists ought to be vigilant in distinguishing between constructive criticism of Israel and dehumanizing caricatures of Jews.

7. Self-Defense. Only the most uncompromising pacifists oppose the right to self-defense, and certainly most Leftists uphold this right. At least when Palestinians are doing the defending. Why are Israelis exempt from this right? How many Leftists would sit idly by while rockets rained down on their towns and families, with their children traumatized? And if we said, oh, but people are only killed occasionally, would that minimize your commitment to protect your family? Only Jews are expected to lay down their weapons and offer their throats. How dare the Jews have the chutzpah to fight back?!

8. Progress. We want movement on Palestinian-Israeli and Arab-Israeli peacemaking. Yet, demonizing Israel, singling it out, as is done at the UN and on college campuses will do little to advance peace. We all know, have all known for decades the basic outlines of a peace settlement. The Israelis have been prepared for this and have prepared their citizens. The Left should be pressuring Palestinians to accept peace and to stop teaching their children that Jews are monsters after their blood. This sort of pressure might bring some progress.

It was long ago time for Leftists to tear down the poster that features Israel as the demon-child of human rights abuse and repression. It is time for Leftists to become outraged not over Israel, but over the distortions and demonization of Israel on college campuses and at the United Nations and throughout the media and politics. It is time for Leftists to reject the treatment of Israel as a pariah, or Jews as bloodthirsty murderers, and time instead to welcome Israel into the community of nations as a full member, subject to the same criticism and praise as any other nation.

A senior judge was under investigation yesterday after being accused of making anti-Semitic remarks in court that may have swayed his jury into acquitting a group of protesters.

Judge George Bathurst-Norman was said by critics to have persuaded a jury to clear a group of campaigners who smashed up a factory making parts for Israeli warplanes.

Summing up in the criminal damage trial, he compared Israel to the Nazi regime and accused the country of ignoring international law.

The judge added that 'there may be much to be admired' about the chief protester, and that 'in the last war he would probably have received a George Medal'.

The Office for Judicial Complaints, which deals with objections over the conduct of judges and magistrates, confirmed that an inquiry into how Judge Bathurst-Norman handled the trial of five political activists at Hove Crown Court in June is under way.

Its findings will be considered by Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge and Lord Chancellor Kenneth Clarke, who have the final say on any disciplinary action.

A number of complaints are said to have accused the judge not just of anti-Israel rhetoric but specifically of anti-Semitism.

The case involved a group of activists who broke into and vandalised a Brighton factory run by engineering firm EDO MBM.

The company was making parts for use in the bomb-aiming equipment on Israeli F16 warplanes.

The invasion shut the factory for a week and caused £187,000 worth of damage. But five men and women who appeared in court claimed they had done nothing wrong under criminal damage law.

The law says someone is not guilty of causing damage if they believed it was necessary for the immediate protection of someone else's property.

It is framed to protect, for example, someone who smashes a neighbour's door down if they believe their house is on fire.

However, in the Brighton case, the activists claimed they believed their invasion was necessary for the protection of property in Gaza.

Several similar defences by protesters have been successful in recent years.

In 2008, six Greenpeace protesters were acquitted after causing £30,000 worth of damage at a coal-fired power station.

The jury in that case accepted they had acted to prevent climate change causing greater damage.

Describing evidence shown in court, Judge Bathurst-Norman told the jury that he could only describe the 'horrific' events shown as 'scenes which one would rather have hoped to have disappeared with the Nazi regimes of the last war'.

In his summing up, he gave his backing to the evidence of one defendant, Ornella Saibene, a former Greenham Common activist.

The judge said: 'She took us through the horrors, and there really is no other word for it than horrors, that emerged in the press and on the news and the footage as to what the Israelis were doing in Gaza.

'You may think that perhaps "Hell on Earth" would be an understatement of what the Gazans endured.'

Among groups complaining was the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Its president, Vivian Wineman, said: 'The judge's comments give rise to profound concerns about the appropriateness of his directions to the jury.'

Jonathan Hoffman, of the Zionist Federation, said: 'This opens the door to any group which thinks the British presence in Afghanistan is wrong to go and smash up plants supplying British forces.'

In a small Jerusalem café, I sat with Noam Shalit and tried to discuss his son, Gilad. I say tried because each time Noam, a soft-spoken, bespectacled man, began a sentence, the owner of the café rushed over with complimentary plates of humus, salads and desserts. Passersby, glimpsing Noam through the window, burst inside to embrace him. “We are with you,” they cried. “We will get our Gilad home.”

That our is the key to understanding the devotion that Israelis feel for Gilad Shalit. The Israel Defense Forces is a citizens’ army in which most young men serve for a minimum of three years, followed by several decades of reserve duty. Young women serve for at least two. Our soldiers are literally our parents, our siblings, our children. Israel is also a small country with few if any degrees of separation between families. Even those who have never met the Shalits know someone who has. And all of us have loved ones—a brother, a son—who could suffer the same ordeal that Gilad began four years ago today.

Early on the morning of June 25, 2006, Hamas terrorists—using a tunnel secretly excavated during a cease-fire with Israel—infiltrated across the Gaza border and attacked an IDF base. Firing rocket grenades and automatic weapons, they killed two soldiers—Lt. Hanan Barak and Sgt. Pavel Slutzker, both 20—and kidnapped the 19-year-old corporal, Gilad Shalit. The IDF promptly launched a massive manhunt in Gaza, suffering an additional five fatalities, but failed to find the abductors. Hamas, meanwhile, demanded that Israel release more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, most of them convicted terrorists, in exchange for Gilad’s freedom.

Since then, Gilad’s parents, Noam and Aviva Shalit, have only received three letters from their son as well as a brief video showing an emaciated hostage with a haunted expression and lightless eyes. Hamas has refused to allow the Red Cross or other NGOs to visit Gilad, or to permit mail or aid packages to reach him. And to mock the Shalit family’s suffering, Hamas has staged re-enactments of the kidnapping, most recently in a Gaza summer camp, and plays in which actors portraying Gilad beg for their release. An animated Hamas film depicts an aged Noam Shalit grieving over his son’s coffin.

The plight of Gilad Shalit poses painful dilemmas. Should Israel negotiate with Hamas, a terror organization sworn to its destruction, and unleash hundreds of terrorists, many of whom will quickly return to murdering? Or can Israel leave Gilad to languish alone indefinitely, prolonging his family’s agony and undermining the faith in which other families send their children to battle?

There are no easy answers. Yet Israel has consistently sought to secure Gilad’s freedom through the good offices of intermediaries, all the while striving to reconcile the nation’s security needs with the time-honored Jewish principle of pidayon shivuyim, the redemption of prisoners.

The struggle to bring Gilad home has become a national passion for Israelis. His birthday and the anniversary of his abduction are both commemorated with dramatic public events. In one such rally, some 2,000 young people sailed a “freedom for Gilad” fleet of homemade rafts across the Sea of Galilee. Photographs of Gilad as a whimsical teenager loom from public walls and flutter on flags from car antennas. His name is emblazoned on bracelets popular among Israeli youth and the days of his captivity are displayed on a booth near the prime minister’s residence.

But the campaign to free Gilad Shalit is hardly limited to Israel. The mayors of Miami and New Orleans have made him an honorary citizen, as have the cities of Paris and Rome. President Nicolas Sarkozy has declared Gilad’s release “a top French priority,” and President Barack Obama has further condemned his “inhumane detention.”

Nevertheless, Gilad Shalit remains in solitary confinement—in spite of the protests and his parents’ unflagging appeals to the international community. Lost in the recent tumult surrounding Israel’s efforts to block Iranian and Syrian arms shipments to Hamas, which has fired 10,000 rockets at Israeli civilians to date, is the unending nightmare of the Shalit family. Their pain is shared by countless Israelis and well-wishers worldwide. We must not rest until our Gilad is once again safely at home.

In February 2007, Hillary Clinton, then Senator from New York, held a press conference with Itamar Marcus, director of Palestinian Media Watch, to highlight the problem of Palestinian incitement in school books and media glorifying martyrdom and killing Jews:

Bollywood goes..... Hitler?!

There is nothing wrong with doing a film about Hitler's last days; however, in Bollywood, a film is raising a few eyebrows: Dear Friend, Hitler. The title comes from two letters that Ghandi wrote to Hitler:

The first letter requested Hitler to stop the war while the second posed to him the unique preachers of non violence. He wrote that we seek to convert our enemies not defeat them on the battlefield.

According to the news feed from Time magazine (click here) the film, according to it's director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar:

"[The film is focusing on] Hitler’s love for India and how he indirectly contributed to Indian independence. … It aims to capture the personality of Adolf Hitler and his insecurities, his charisma and his paranoia during the last few days of his life."

According to Nalin Singh, one of the writers of the script, claims the movie will be about the contrasting ideologies of Hitler's violence and Ghandi's non-violence (see full article here).

There is something terribly wrong with Bollywood. India's Jewish community is outraged:

"Whoever is making this film is doing so with ignorant, if not more sinister motives," Jonathan Solomon, the chairman of the Indian Jewish Federation, told Reuters, adding, "They are hurting the feelings of a community that has suffered a great deal." (Source)

As of right now, the star of the film, Anupam Kher, withdrew from the project, saying:

"I wish to withdraw from the film because it is creating ill feelings among my fans and I respect their sentiments. I was never affected by commercial considerations but social opinions always matter to me." (Source)

Many attempts have been made to attack and slander the Jewish State, almost all of it based on anti-Semitism. One of these attacks is to boycott, divest, and impose sanctions (aka the BDS Movement). While there are some who have decided to cancel their performance in Israel for those reasons, one person saw the ridiculousness in this argument and saw Israel as it is: an open, free, and vibrant democracy in the Middle East. New Revelations from Op-Ed piece by Ambassador Michael Oren Re: Flotilla Lynching of Israeli Navy soldiers

Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, has made some interesting revelations regarding what has been found on the flotilla, revealed in an Op-Ed piece to the NY Times. Here are some of the major discoveries made by the IDF's investigation:

1. "About 100 of those detained from the boats were carrying immense sums in their pockets — nearly a million euros in total."

2. "Israel discovered spent bullet cartridges on the Mavi Marmara that are of a caliber not used by the Israeli commandos, some of whom suffered gunshot wounds."

3. "Also found on the boat were propaganda clips showing passengers 'injured' by Israeli forces; these videos, however, were filmed during daylight, hours before the nighttime operation occurred"

4. "They also rebuffed an Israeli request to earmark some aid packages for Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas for four years."

Israel Navy attempted to enforce Gaza blockade, provided warning, and then was attacked

It is always upsetting to hear about the loss of life. However, this morning, the Israeli Navy announced to the Gaza flotilla, carrying, what they claim, to be supplies to provide humanitarian aid.

While I will acknowledge the situation inside Gaza is an unfortunate situation, the blockade is understandable. First, it is one thing if one country, Israel, is doing this; however, a fact lost in the discussion, is the this blockade is being supported by and enforced by Egypt as well.

Second, that this organization and groups of organization has been linked to terrorist organizations that support the work of Hamas and other Islamic terrorist activities, according to the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center's report (click here for the report and click here for the follow up report). As if one needed any further evidence of this connection, only days ago, Palestinian Media Watch released this report video below:

Earlier this morning, according to a report by London's Telegraph, Israeli Navy ships went out and made the following announcement to the flotilla:

When the ships did not respond, troops where flow in to enforce the blockade. The Israeli Navy released this shocking footage:

Israel has released a couple of new videos, providing further evidence that the flotilla was not intent on carrying aid to Gaza, but prepared to fight, and even kill, Israeli's.

90% of Arab/Muslim Nations surveyed view Jews "unfavorably."

The Pew Research Center, "an independent, non-partisan public opinion research organization that studies attitudes toward politics, the press and public policy issues," has released polling numbers conducted in Muslim/Arab countries and the numbers, while not surprising considering their "educational programming" (see here) and textbooks that they teach children with (see here), that they view the Jews "unfavorably." The numbers speak for themselves (click here for full article):

"In the predominantly Muslim nations surveyed, views of Jews were overwhelmingly unfavorable. Nearly all in Jordan (97 percent), the Palestinian territories (97%) and Egypt (95%) held an unfavorable view. Similarly, 98% of Lebanese expressed an unfavorable opinion of Jews, including 98% among both Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims, as well as 97% of Lebanese Christians.

By contrast, only 35% of Israeli Arabs expressed a negative opinion of Jews, while 56% voiced a favorable opinion.

The survey was conducted between May 18 to June 16, 2009.

The sample size of each of the countries surveyed was over 1,000 people and the margin of error was 3%. Results for the surveys in these nations are based on face-to-face interviews conducted under the direction of Princeton Survey Research Associates International. All surveys are based on national samples, except in Pakistan where the sample was disproportionately urban."

While I am a proponent of real & lasting peace, the numbers here clearly show us a picture of the Middle East where Israel continues to be ready for negotiations (see here and here) and the Arab/Muslim countries in the region show that only through killing innocent people, more so Jews, Israelis and Americans (see here), they could continue this process of radicalization and leading their citizens to thoughts and beliefs in racism, bigotry, and Antisemitism.

The report has been used by Israel bashers left and right as an "independent resource" from a Jewish person (Richard Goldstone, the head of the committee) as proof of "Israeli aggression" against Palestinians. Each summer brings it own "flavor." Last summer, we had the 2008 Presidential campaigns. This summer, it's about Healthcare reform. Now, I'm not going to give any opinion on health care reform, but in recent days things have been getting out of hand. Take for example the case of Rep. David Scott (D-GA 13th), whose office in Georgia found a Swastika was painted outside his office. His staff called the police and Capitol Police in Washington, DC have been notified of the incident and continue to beef up security as the protests get louder and, to some extent, more violent. Rep. Scott also said that he's been getting hate mail which uses the "n word" and makes claims that President Obama is a Marxist.

While I will not give an opinion on healthcare reform or on President Obama, going to calling them critics racial slurs and swastikas, something clearly has gone too far. So if you want to be critical, be critical, but don't allow yourself to fall into that trap of racism and bigotry. Stick to the politics.

"Durban II" more of the same old anti-Semitism

For those of you who have not had the chance to review the coverage of what is known as in its slang as "Durban II," essentially the conference was more of the same as the previous Durban conference in 2001 with a new twist, a major world leader was given a stage, and this time the world knew what he was going to say. What occured part of the way through the speech was something unique and a strong commentary on what those in the West think of this particular world leader:

And in case you thought nothing else could go wrong, think again. Elie Weisel, a Holocaust Survivor and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, was taunted with cries of "ZioNazi" as well as being called a racist:

Finally, if the absurdity of a conference validating the "findings" of the previous Durban conference (the baseless accusation of Israel as "racist and apartheid" state as well as other attacks on Israel as being the worst violator of Human Right, etc), this exchange with a Palestinian who was tortured by Qaddafi regime tries to speak out and the Libya, the country that was chosen to be the head of the committee that planned this years conference, silences him and the crimes committed against him:

In the end, what will the legacy of this years Durban conference be? I believe Ms. Anne Bayefsky, senior fellow of the Hudson Institute and founder of "Eye On The UN," said it best in her comments to the Durban II conference:

Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Rememberance Day 2009

Today, the Jewish community around the world remembers the 6,000,000 of its brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and friends who perished in the horrors of the Holocaust. Holocaust Remembrance Day (or Yom HaShoah in Hebrew) was established by the State of Israel and is commemorated with two major events. One is a formal ceremony at Yad Vashem, the other is at 10AM Israel time when a siren is sounded and the whole country stops for a moment to remember those who perished in the Holocaust.

In 2003, a special ceremony was done at Auschwitz culminating in a flyover by the Israeli Air Force (IAF)

A Passover message from the Anti-Semitism Report

Dear Readers,
Tonight, the Jewish people around the world will be participating in a week long ceremony called Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew). The holiday is in commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt and with this holiday come even stronger rules than those of only Kosher. Jewish people, during this time (the evening of April 8 - evening of April 16th) cannot each any leaven products because just like the Jews who couldn't even eat any bread during the Exodus, so too we will eat the Matzos thay they made. However, as with other Jewish holidays, Anti-Semitism rears its ugly head. Here below are some of the few modern day examples that center around something called the blood libel, an accusation that stems from roughly 1st Century.

However, the accusations shown above from Arab TV (as well as other accusations of blood libels made in other forms (see The Canterbury Tales) does not tell the story of Passover. Anti-Semitism gets no punishment for Canadian Politician

Anti-Semitism is a worldwide disease. It spreads its wings and corrupts the minds of all people, no matter what religion, creed, race, or nationality one may be. Six years ago, David Ahenakew, a Canadian politician made a series of anti-Semitic remarks, blaming the Jews for WWII and for, along with the United States (with then President George W. Bush) and Israel, creating the chance of WWIII as well as for controlling the media. He also said when asked if the Holocaust was justifiable, he responded "The Jews damn near owned all of Germany prior to the war. ... That's how Hitler came in. He was going to make damn sure that the Jews didn't take over Germany or Europe. That's why he fried six million of those guys, you know. Jews would have owned the goddamned world. And look what they're doing. They're killing people in Arab countries." He also added "How do you get rid of a disease like that, that's going to take over, that's going to dominate?" He was charged by Canadian officials for spreading hatred. He was convincted and fined $1,000.

Then, in 2006, Justice Robert Laing of the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench overturned the decision on the grounds that the law stipulates that the person saying it has to have done it willingly, and that this tirade was a result of his anger while being interviewed by a reporter. The judge ordered a second trial. Then, roughly an hour ago (as of 3:20PM EST), the judge ordered that no more trials for Mr. Ahenakew and that the decision was final. No punishment, no fine, nothing.

So in other words, he blames the Jews for WWII, blames them for trying to create WWIII, ethnic genocide against the Arabs, that Jews control the media and he is a politician who said this to a reporter but the justice system decided that on a technicallity, nothing else happens to him? My suggestion for Mr. Ahenakew is to take a lesson from Judge Hatchett and how she dealt with a similar issue.

MADRID (AP) — The Anti-Defamation League said Tuesday that a survey it commissioned found nearly a third of Europeans polled blame Jews for the global economic meltdown and that a greater number think Jews have too much power in the business world.

The organization, which says its aim is "to stop the defamation of Jewish people and secure justice and fair treatment to all," says the seven-nation survey confirms that anti-Semitism remains strong.

The poll included interviews with 3,500 people — 500 each in Austria, Britain, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain.

It says that in Spain, 74 percent of those asked say they feel it is "probably true" that Jews hold too much sway over the global financial markets. That is the highest percentage in the survey.

Nearly two-thirds of Spanish respondents said Jews were more loyal to Israel than they were to their home countries.

"This poll confirms that anti-Semitism remains alive and well in the minds of many Europeans," said Abraham H. Foxman, the ADL's national director in America. "Clearly, age old anti-Semitic stereotypes die hard."

Foxman said the study's findings were "particularly worrisome" in light of the anger spawned by the global economic meltdown, and following a number of violent acts against Jews or Jewish property after Israel's military action in the Gaza Strip.

Around Europe, several attacks have been reported against Jews and synagogues in France, Sweden and Britain since the Israeli offensive began in late December. Some Gaza protests in Europe have included the use of Nazi imagery, including signs and slogans comparing Israeli soldiers to German troops, the Gaza Strip to the Auschwitz death camp and the Jewish Star of David to the Nazi swastika.

Britain consistently registered the lowest levels of anti-Jewish sentiment, and numbers there have fallen from a similar survey conducted in 2007. Austria also registered a slight drop in the level of anti-Semitism, while in other countries anti-Semitic sentiment either remained the same or deepened, the survey indicated.

Poland's chief rabbi, Michael Schudrich, who saw the survey before it was published, said he has not seen any rise in anti-Semitism in Poland since the global financial crisis has unfolded. He said an unacceptable level of anti-Jewish sentiment still exists in Poland, but that it is no worse than in other European countries.

The survey showed Polish responses registered a slight rise in all but one area. On the question whether it was "probably true" Jews have too much power in international financial markets, the level was unchanged from 2007.

The survey, conducted by First International Resources Dec. 1, 2008 through Jan. 13, 2009, included interviews with 3,500 people — 500 each in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain. The margin of error for each country was plus or minus 4 percent.

In total, about 40 percent of those questioned said Jews have too much power in the business world, including more than half of Hungarian, Spanish and Polish respondents. And 44 percent said they believe it is "probably true" that Jews still talk too much about the Holocaust.

Anti Semitism in rallies advertised as "Pro-Palestinian" or "Anti-War"

Hamas Inflated Number of Dead

According to various sources, mainly the Jerusalem Post and ynetnews, which quotes an Italian newspaper, claims from various Palestinians and one Palestinian doctor that the number dead is around 500-600 maximum and, as this unnamed Palestinian doctor says "Most of them are youths between the ages of 17 to 23 who were recruited to the ranks of Hamas, who sent them to the slaughter." Within this report is further evidence of Hamas using the civilian population as human shields. From the Jerusalem Post, "One Gazan recalled civilians in Gaza shouting at Hamas and Islamic Jihad men, 'Go away, go away from here! Do you want the Israelis to kill us all? Do you want our children to die under their bombs? Take your guns and missiles with you.'

'Traitors, collaborators with Israel, spies of Fatah, cowards! The soldiers of the holy war will punish you. And in any case you will all die, like us. Fighting the Zionist Jews we are all destined for paradise. Do you not wish to die with us?' the religious fanatics of Hamas reportedly responded." It is also noted in this report that Hamas fighters dressed up as paramedics and driving hospitals. One Palestinian reported that she saw Hamas firing rockets in and on top of UN buildings. Another Palestinian told the reporter "Armed Hamas men sought out a good position for provoking the Israelis. There were mostly teenagers, aged 16 or 17, and armed. They couldn't do a thing against a tank or a jet. They knew they are much weaker, but they fired at our houses so that they could blame Israel for war crimes."

When this Italian reporter talked with Palestinian reporters about the fighting and these inflated numbers, they said that this would be similar to what happened in Jenin when "there was first talk of 1,500 deaths. But then it turned out that there were only 54, 45 of which were armed men."

What caused the current "Hamas War?"

On December 27 Israel launched a defensive action against Hamas titled Operation: Cast Lead. One of the many questions being asked is why such actions need to occur?

On December 19, a six month cease-fire between Hamas and Israel ended and almost immediately, rockets fell in southern Israel including over 80 in one day! After 8 years of rockets (since 2001) being fired on the residents of such cities as Ashkelon and Sderot, no other choice was left for Israel but to begin it's defensive measures against Hamas. Don't believe me? Consider the following evidence, captured by the Israeli Air Force:

Now how does Israel respond to such actions? Until recently it hasn't. It also doesn't "return fire" because doing so endangers the lives of innocent children and other civilians in the areas. This is the case with almost all the rockets being fired from Gaza, being fired within civilian populations making it nearly impossible to return fire unless it kills innocent civilians!

Now, what about those videos of mass explosions after Israel bombs a location? In the video below, Israel fires a rocket at a mosque believed to be a holding place for weapons by Hamas. When Israel fires a rocket you'll see the normal explosion followed by the 2nd explosion which is from the hidden weapons.

Now, as one Palestinian supporter told me that the rockets being fired into Israel by Hamas were "silly little things." Here is a presentation from Noam Bedein of Sderot Media Center about the situation in the southern part of Israel:

If you’ve read my monthly biographies in the Shir Notes you know I enjoy writing about people (mainly Jews) who have in some way made our world better for me. Peter Yarrow, who is such a person, was born in New York City May 31, 1938 to Jewish parents who were immigrants from the Ukraine. He graduated from New York City's "High School of Music and Art" (as an art student) and then Cornell University (experimental psychology) in 1959. Yarrow met Noel "Paul" Stookey and Mary Travers in Greenwich Village, center of the mid-20th century American folk music revival. They formed the folk-singing trio of Peter, Paul, and Mary and soon were among the most successful in the business.

Among their many hits were If I Had a Hammer, This Land is Your Land, Blowin' in the Wind, Where Have All the Flowers Gone?, and Puff the Magic Dragon (lyrics by fellow Cornell student, Leonard Lipton, music by Peter Yarrow).

They mixed music with political and social activism. In 1963 the trio marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Ala., and Washington, D.C. They were also involved in many of the civil rights and social causes of the 1960s as well as protests against the Vietnam War. Although Yarrow did not have a religious upbringing, he later acknowledged a strong Jewish identification. He now speaks of tikkun olam when referring to the many projects he organizes and supports. He was also a leader in the movement to free Soviet Jews.

Yarrow has long been a peace activist. In 1983 he wrote the Chanukah song Light One Candle that would also be, in his words, “a call for peace and reconciliation". "When I wrote the song, I was forced to look inside myself," he said. He and his daughter, Bethany, traveled to the Middle East at the height of the first intifada. They visited the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Syria plus other sites in Israel.

And, amazingly, Peter, Paul, and Mary still perform as a trio. Yarrow also performs with his daughter in a group called Peter, Bethany and Rufus.

The United Nations: Created to create peace, now "mourns the creation of Israel."

Sandra Samuel, the nanny who saved Moshe Holtzberg in Mumbai will be given Israel's highest honor to those who are not Jewish, "Righteous Gentile." Normally, an honor like this in Israel is reserved for those who saved Jews during the Holocaust; however, Israel moved along the process, which usually takes months, made the exception and will honor her with the title as well as planting a tree in her honor among the "Garden of the Righteous" as Yad Vashem. This will enable her and her co-worker Jackie to live in Israel with Moshe at a secret location in Israel.

Nazi Flag Flies in area controlled by Palestinian Authority

According to Israel National News, in an area of Hevron you can see a flag flying in the wind that happens to be controlled by the Palestinian Authority, the official voice of the Palestinian people, a Nazi flag flies in the wind. The IDF is finding it difficult to remove because of its location; however, according to a source with the Israel National News, they want it kept up so that way people know what they have to deal with on an everyday basis. Once again, this is not an isolated incident when it comes to the brainwashing of the Palestinian population into believing an ideology of hate.

Universal Deceleration on Human Rights 60th Anniversary: From Promise and Hope to Despair and Ignorance

Today, 60 years ago today, spearheaded by Eleanor Roosevelt, the Universal Deceleration of Human Rights was passed and the Human Rights Council, meant to defend and protect Human Rights around the world. What has happened with this council is that absolutely nothing has happened. In fact, the Human Rights Council has made the human rights situation even worse, which has lead to genocides in Kosovo and Rwanda while also turning a blind eye towards abuses of human rights like the subjugation of women in Saudi Arabia and other countries that rule under Radical Islamic rule in the region and the current genocide going on in Darfur. What has occurred instead is that the Human Rights Council, once a beacon of hope and meant to defend human rights around the world has come under control of countries, one of them being Saudi Arabia, the worst violators of Human Rights! It is also within these hallowed halls that the world's only functioning democracy in the Middle East, the Jewish State, Israel is condemned left and right so many times that even Kofi Anna, former Secretary-General of the United Nations criticized the Council for “disproportionate focus on [alleged] violations by Israel.” To get a clearer idea of what I'm trying to say, I refer you to the following video bellow. Compare and contrast what is said and by whom in the Council and what the independent organization UN Watch says. Tell me what is wrong here?

New Jimmy Carter Book on the Middle East

According to The Huffington Post, former President Jimmy Carter who wrote the incredibly bias and anti-Semitic book "Palestine: Peace not Apartheid," (see my report on the book here) has written a new book on the Middle East. The title of the book is "We Can Bring Peace to the Holy Land." At least it is something that won't cause a firestorm because of the title; however, with President Carter's previous book on Israel, I do not expect for Carter to deviate from his previous thesis on the Middle East conflict.

Terrorist attack in Mumbai: Act of Terror, Act of Anti-Semitism

A couple of weeks ago in Mumbai, India, terrorism hit the city with the death toll of over 180 people and hundreds more killed. Two of those killed were Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, the directors of the Chabad of Mumbai, . For those who do not know what the Chabad organization is, they are an international organization of Orthodox Jews that provide services to Jewish people in the cities they are located in and a place for traveling Jews to come to for all their Jewish needs. The attacks, as well as the horrors of what happened at the Chabad house was preplanned with the Chabad house as one of the targets. This Chabad house in particular was not only a place for traveling Jews, but for the local Jewish community in India which now fears for it's safety.

Three days ago the Jewish/Israeli victims of the Mumbai terrorist attack was buried, the burial was broadcast on Israeli TV.

That was Moshe Holtzberg. He was in the Chabad House of Mumbai during the siege but was saved by his nanny. What he is saying is "Ima" which is Hebrew for "Mommy."

The following piece was published in the Times of India. It's an open letter to Moshe:

Dear Moshe,

My heart went out to you when I saw you on television, as your Indian nanny carried you out of Nariman House or Chabad House or shall we say Sabbath House, as it was almost the Sabbath, the day of your liberation. It was hard to figure out as to what was going on, as there were so many people around you. You looked visibly frightened. You did not understand what was going on and clung to your nanny, although your eyes were searching for your parents' comforting presence.

At such a young age, you were already a captive, maybe a tiny hostage in last week's madness. You must have seen so much, maybe then you were in your mother's lap and she must have tried to keep you quiet, whispering comforting words in your ears, so that you would not start crying and annoy the terrorists. At that moment you were just a baby not a Jew, as that is how the terrorists had held your family captive, just because they were Jewish. They had tracked down your family's identity and overnight made you into an orphan. Wonder what made them release you? Did they soften or think that you were a harmless baby or did they want to separate you from your parents, or did they want you to live, so that you would always remember those horrifying days. What a heart-wrenching scene it must have been, to tear you apart from your mother's bosom. Maybe your parents must have let you go as they wanted to save you from the claws of sure death.

Then there was the passage of time when you left Chabad House with your nanny leaving your parents behind. Till they died, they must have never known if you were alive or dead as there was no way of knowing the truth. Your father was a rabbi, well versed in the Hebrew prayers of life and death, and he must have asked the Lord to protect you from such terrifying violence. They say, the death of your parents was a message to the Jews of the Diaspora. But then, Jews as a race have always faced violence throughout history.

Little Moshe, as you leave India with your grandparents to live in Israel, you will again come face to face with bloodshed and violence. Wonder if you will avenge your parents' death or will you work for peace?

Your parents named you Moshe, meaning Moses, and your story is similar to the one in the Bible, where Moses was left to drift in the river Nile, to save him from the Pharaoh's sword and how he became the prince of Egypt and led the Jewish people to freedom. Maybe, you will also choose the path of freedom and peace. Because, you survived in India, the only country in the world where Jews were never persecuted and with your survival, I experience an iota of hope in this terrifying medley of hate, violence and death.

You are just two years old and maybe all you have learnt to say so far, is shalom peace be with you' .

Iranians mock Holocaust on last friday of Ramadan

Today on the last day of the month of Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam and one of the pillars of Islam, radicalism, bigotry, hatred, and anti-Semitism was rampant in the streets of Iran. Tens of thousands of students, with the "Minister of Education" present, held their Quds Day (or Jerusalem Day. The Ayatollah in 1979 made it that the last Friday in the month of Ramadan a "day of solidarity" with the Palestinians for Muslims around the world). What occurs on this day is showing "Oppression" of the Palestinians people by the "Zionist Regime" (as President Ahmadinejad has referred to the Jewish State of Israel). What makes this more unsettling (in case this doesn't bother you) a new book was presented at this "rally."

Under the following banner, "The Islamic world will not recognize the fake Zionist regime under any circumstances and believes that this cancerous tumor will one day be wiped off the face of the earth," a book that mocks the Holocaust has been created. Here are some of the contents of this book, published by the Islamist Basij militia:

The cover shows a Jew with a crooked nose and dressed in traditional garb drawing outlines of dead bodies on the ground.
Bearded Jews are shown leaving and re-entering a gas chamber with a counter that reads the number 5,999,999.
Jewish prisoners entering a furnace in a Nazi extermination camp and leaving as gun-wielding terrorists from the other side.
A patient covered in an Israeli flag and on life support breathing Zyklon-B, the poisonous gas used in the extermination chambers.
The commentary inside the book includes anti-Semitic stereotypes and revisionist arguments, casting doubt on the massacre of Jews and mocking Holocaust survivors who claimed reparations after World War II.
One comment in a question-and-answer format reads:"How did the Germans emit gas into chambers while there were no holes on the ceiling?" Answer: "Shut up, you criminal anti-Semite. How dare you ask this question?"

Iranians also held place cards that said "Israel will be destroyed, Palestine is Victorious," "Holy war until victory," and both American and Israeli flags were burned.

The history of the Greek Jews is quite interesting if not fascinating. They are the so-called Romaniotes and they’re mostly of Sephardic ancestry. Thessaloniki was the city which had the biggest Jewish population. Samuel Usque described it as “Mother of Israel”. By the year 1902 62,000 Jews were living in the city, 50% of the total population. On July 11, 1942 the Jews of Thessaloniki were rounded up in preparation for deportation to the German camps. Only 1,950 returned. Today, Thessaloniki is a city of only a bit less than 1,000 Jews, 0.2% of the total population. Only one synagogue, out of 60, is left. It is a pity for this community, to lose one of its significant minority. Jews never had a problem among other groups in Greece. Every day was a smooth experience.

Greek Jews never encountered anything remotely as sinister as Northern European anti- Semitism. However, the 20th century had witnessed the rise of anti-Semitism among Greeks. I should point out that this was an insignificant minority.

During the WWII the orthodox church and population tried to hide and save the Jews. Zakynthos saved all of its Jewish residents. Carrer, the mayor and Bishop Chrysostomos handed a list to the German Nazis which only contained two names, their own. In year 2008 some things have changed. There have been some incidents worth telling here.

The synagogue in Thessaloniki has attracted fascists and Neo-Nazis who draw swastikas on the streets. The Jewish cemetery in Yanena was attacked and Jewish graves were destroyed.
There are no reports of physical or verbal assaults on Jews.

Personally, I have never been judged for my religion. The problem I usually face is that I have to stand up for my religion when I hear anti-semitic jokes from people who obviously don’t know my religion. And they are usually shocked when I tell them.
Mose Altsech, a Greek Jew who teaches in Wisconsin at Edgewood College, says “To be Greek means to be white, ethnic Greek, and orthodox. They have difficulty understand how someone who’s not Christian is a truly Greek. My family has been in Greece since the 15th century but they still don’t consider us Greeks."

Negative attitudes towards Israel are cleared and shared by the majority.

In mainstream media as well. They claim that Israel is engaged in a genocide against the Palestinians.
Former Greek President Christos Sartzetakis once made the famous statement: "Greeks are a nation without brethren." Yet there are frequent references to "our Palestinian brothers."

Mikis Theodorakis, a very famous Greek musician, composer and former minister, stated “Jews are the root of all evil”.
There’s a ritual of “burning the Juda” during the Greek Easter, but many locals call it “burning of the Jew”.

I mentioned these because they are the most significant incidents and comments made by widely accepted and respected individuals.

We have to try and keep the anti-Semitic population a minority. The Jews of Greece are keeping a low profile and try to avoid any conflict. I’m not, in any case, saying that Greek population is anti-Semitic in a whole. Antisemitism is found here as its found in most countries. And that is something which needs to change.

It has come to this for Norman Finkelstein: Back home in the Brooklyn of his youth, living alone in his deceased father’s rent-stabilized apartment on Ocean Parkway, just a few blocks from where the white-hot controversial professor grew up.

No more loyal students, no more lectures to prepare, no more radio debates with his arch-enemy, Alan Dershowitz, no more national spotlight; Finkelstein is the man no one wants, and perhaps for good reason.

A year ago, DePaul University, where he taught political science for six years, denied Finkelstein tenure in one of the most bruising tenure battles in recent memory. The story made national headlines, fueled by Dershowitz’s crusade against Finkelstein’s scholarship.

Finkelstein’s supporters painted the Harvard law professor as an outside agitator encroaching on

an internal tenure process; some of his students went on a hunger strike in his support. No major university will touch him now.

“Who wants to go through what DePaul went through with a national hysteria,” Finkelstein says, shrugging. “To be told I was a Holocaust denier and a terrorist supporter — would you want me on your faculty?”

And Israel shut its doors on him in May, barring him from entering the country; it never gave him a reason, but news reports attributed it to his strong and highly vocal anti-Israel views, and for associating with elements hostile to the Jewish State. (Finkelstein says he met with leaders of the terrorist group Hezbollah during a trip to Beirut in January.) After 18 hours in detention at Ben-Gurion Airport, he was taken onto a plane and whisked out of the country.

It’s not hard to see why Finkelstein is anathema in most Jewish circles, simply beyond the pale. He has struck out — with a vengeance — at the twin pillars of postwar Jewish life: the Holocaust (which he calls “the Holocaust industry”) and Israel. The Jewish community, he argues, has exploited the Holocaust for financial gain, sullying the memory of the Six Million.

And he has cavorted with Israel’s enemies, meeting with and praising Hezbollah. During the height of Israel’s 2006 war with Lebanon, as Hezbollah was raining rockets down on northern Israel and Israel was bombing Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut and targets elsewhere in the country, Finkelstein took the stage at a rally in Brooklyn and intoned, “We are all Hezbollah.”

So the Pariah of Ocean Parkway is at the low point in his life, his academic career in shambles. (The only offer of a job has come from a two-year college he declined to identify that offered a paltry salary for many hours of work.) Here he sits, in his father’s old apartment, surrounded by framed family photographs. The photos, along with glowing pictures and notes from DePaul students that sit on his piano, may be his only comfort as he tries to pick up the pieces of his career.

Finkelstein may be down on his luck, but the provocateur still seems to have some fight in him. He spends hours at the computer on his combative, over-the-top Web site — a video of him debating Dershowitz in a radio studio is interspersed with clips of Bruce Lee-like martial arts warriors fighting to the death.

Finkelstein says he’s content with things, that he wants to avoid further controversy. “I’ve had 15 minutes of fame and then a half-hour and then 10 hours; I don’t need anymore. ... I’m not worried about being a pariah,” he says. Yet the title of the new book he’s working on — “A Farewell to Israel: The Coming Break-up of American Zionism” — suggests that controversy may yet find him again, that Finkelstein may be bowed but not broken.

On a muggy late spring day, Finkelstein is walking the old neighborhood around Ocean Parkway and Avenue W. He grew up here in what was an upper-middle-class neighborhood in the late-‘50s and early ‘60s, his parents survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto. He may have absorbed a body blow from DePaul, but at 54 he is lean and trim in a blue T-shirt and khaki shorts, his salt-and-pepper hair tousled. He maintains a disciplined exercise regimen, jogging and swimming regularly.

He spent his first eight years in Flatbush and then moved to Mill Basin with his parents and two brothers until he was 17.

“My parents were devout atheists,” Finkelstein says. (They also had Communist leanings, according to Haaretz, as did many Polish Jews of their generation.) “You couldn’t discuss religion in my house even though my mother’s father was very Orthodox. She said he was like a rabbi. And my father’s, too.

“My parents were completely Jewish; that’s why they did not feel they needed to prove they were Jewish,” he says.

It was perhaps because of that that Finkelstein, who says he too is an atheist, said he never had a bar mitzvah.

“When I was 13, a bar mitzvah was like a coming-out party and to not have one was shameful,” he recalls. “It was terrible. People would ask me if I was having a bar mitzvah and I said I was having it in Israel. ... Not to have a bar mitzvah was a psychologically terrible ordeal, but it gave me character and taught me how to resist peer pressure.”

Both of his brothers — Henry worked for the city and Richard was a computer consultant — retired when they turned 50. “I used to joke that I am still waiting for my first job,” he says with smile.

His brothers are both married and Finkelstein has one nephew. “I don’t have any regrets not marrying,” he says as he walked by the bookshelves that line the entranceway to his apartment.

Among the books were several about Karl Marx, another about the Bolshevik Revolution called, “Ten Days that Shook the World” by John Reed, books about Hitler, and “Defending the Holy Land: A Critical Analysis of Israel’s National Security and Foreign Policy.”

Finkelstein’s career, though it began with a doctorate in politics at Princeton University, has been checkered. His thesis sought to expose as a shoddy piece of research Joan Peters’ best-selling book, “From Time Immemorial,” which debunked the notion of a Palestinian population overwhelmed by Jewish immigrants in the Holy Land. His thesis, in turn, was criticized by many as politically driven, and was supported by few, including Noam Chomsky, the outspoken critic of Israel’s right to exist.

Finkelstein has had trouble holding a job, bouncing from Rutgers University to NYU to Brooklyn College and Hunter College.

Despite what he said were solid evaluations at DePaul — in formal public statements DePaul said Finkelstein is an outstanding teacher and a prolific scholar — Finkelstein says he saw the writing on the wall when he first accepted the position. It’s why, he says, he held onto his father’s apartment for the six years he was in Chicago so that he would not find himself out of work and out of a home.

“I had the best teaching record at DePaul University,” he insists, explaining that the evaluation is based upon student assessments and his writing. He even sailed through the early tenure committees, before the campaign against him was launched by Dershowitz. (In his book “Beyond Chutzpah,” Finkelstein had attacked Dershowitz’s “The Case for Israel” as a fraud.)

“Now I can’t even get an adjunct appointment for one semester,” he says matter-of-factly. “I lectured in the past year at 40 universities and I would ask the faculty there about a position and was told it was out of the question.”

Finkelstein rises from his living room chair and points to the picture of his mother on the wall above the piano, as if to take his mind off his dismal job prospects.

“My mother was in the Warsaw Ghetto from 1939 until 1943,” he says, strongly denying that his mother was a Nazi collaborator — a charge leveled by some of his detractors. “She was also in Majdanek and in two slave labor camps and every member of her family was exterminated – her two sisters, a brother and mother and father.”

A job as a high school teacher is also out of the question, Finkelstein says.

“The way they do background checks is to Google your name. With me, they would get 30,000 Web sites, one-third of them saying I am a Holocaust denier, a supporter of terrorism, a crackpot and a lunatic. If 30,000 Web sites are saying that, the assumption is that where there is smoke, there must be fire. Would you take the time to look through 30,000 Web sites?”

“I save my complaints for my friends,” he says when asked his reaction to such Web sites.

“That’s why we have friends in the world — to chew their ears off.”
Peter Novick isn’t one of those friends. The author of “The Holocaust in American Life” has been critical of Finkelstein’s credibility and scholarship, saying that “a lot of [his writing] was pure invention” and that not all of his footnotes are accurate.

Novick said that in his own book he explored how “much of American Jewry has centered on the Holocaust ... for Finkelstein it’s a racket, with self-aggrandizing Jewish elites who use it to boost their own power; it is nasty and over-the-top stuff.”

He said he feels sorry that Finkelstein has been unable to secure another teaching job, but Novick said Finkelstein knowingly refused to do what it takes to get tenure: publish academically respectable material in academic journals.

“He was much more engaged in doing political rather than academic work, and that is not how you get a regular academic job,” Novick explains. “I’m not saying it in a way to blame him. He made his choice. ... He raises abrasiveness to a matter of principle.”

“On balance,” Novick continues, “would it be a good thing if he had a job? Yes. The idea of this guy in his 50s who has done this all his life now being cut off at the knees is sad.”

He may not have a job, but Finkelstein’s new book, yet to have a publisher, is certain to stir more controversy. Its premise is that American Jews who “embraced Israel [after the Six-Day War] in 1967 — seeing it as a liberal state — now are embarrassed by its use of cluster bombs [in Lebanon]. It’s no longer possible to justify support for Israel on conventional and elementary liberal principles — it’s impossible to justify the occupation.”

A number of surveys suggest that American Jews, especially 20- and 30-year olds, have grown increasingly distant from Israel, but not necessarily for the reasons Finkelstein offers.

“It’s claimed that Israel is searching for peace, yet it says to attack Iran, Syria and Iraq,” Finkelstein continues. “So it’s an embarrassment. Gradually, American Jewry will be bidding farewell to Israel, except in existential cases. And the under-40 generation is growing more and more indifferent” to Israel.

On a drive around his old neighborhood, the discussion turned to his book “The Holocaust Industry,” which claims Israel is an immoral power with a horrific human rights record that seeks to evoke sympathy for its position because of the Holocaust. Finkelstein spoke like a man whom time has vindicated.

“I don’t know if I’ve pushed the envelope,” he said of his claims about Jewish groups extorting money from European countries for Holocaust reparations. “[Famed Holocaust historian Raul] Hilberg supported me, so I’m not sure how much I’m pushing the envelope. Before I charged Jewish groups with a shakedown racket, Hilberg did interviews with the Swiss and German press and said that for the first time in history American Jews are making use of the blackmail weapon. So they were the ones who pushed the envelope by using the Holocaust as a blackmail weapon.”

As he reflected on the fate of some of the main figures in the effort to extract reparations for Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein smiled at the irony of recent events.

Israel Singer, the former secretary general of the World Jewish Congress, was fired after it “turned out he had a secret Swiss bank account he was funneling money to — unbeknownst to the World Jewish Congress — for what he called his pension,” says Finkelstein.

“Burt Neuborne, the lead counsel in the Swiss case, went around saying he was doing the work pro bono for his daughter who was studying to be a rabbi,” he continues. “But it turns out he got $5 million from the German settlement and was asking for $6 million in the Swiss case. Even the New York Times wrote an editorial denouncing him. And Mel Weiss [another lawyer in the case] was indicted [in an unrelated case] and pleaded guilty.”

“They’re all crooks,” Finkelstein says with obvious satisfaction. “The only one not in trouble is me. I’m unemployed, but at least I haven’t been indicted.”

Now, settled into his Brooklyn life, Finkelstein is preparing for what may be his biggest fight, albeit one he doesn’t relish. He plans to go to the Israeli Consulate in New York in September to seek an assurance that he will be admitted in December. Such assurance, he said, would allow all concerned to “avoid the spectacle of me applying under the Law of Return [which gives every Jew the automatic right to acquire Israeli citizenship]. ... It’s hard to see which side will find that more ridiculous.

“I don’t incite riots,” he continued. “I’m just going to see a friend in the occupied Palestinian territories. I’m not there to see Israel. I do not need for every facet of my life to be politicized. If Israeli authorities would just grant me a visa, I’ll move on.”

Finkelstein said he hopes to visit a Palestinian, Musa Abu Hashhash, who lives with his wife and children near Hebron. They first met in 1988 when Finkelstein went to Israel with a delegation from the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee and Finkelstein dedicated one of his books to the man, who works for B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights group. He stressed that his visit to Israel would be a “private” affair and that he had “no interest in turning this into a political issue. ... I don’t think they can deny me, and I don’t want to turn it into a test case for the Israeli High Court.”

As things stand now, however, Norman Finkelstein, the grand provocateur, waits in limbo for a shot at returning to the Promised Land, a land he has made a career of reviling.

Anti-Semitism in Arab Media being tackled by U.S. Congress

On June 20, in a non-binding resolution sponsored by Rep. Gary Ackerman (New York's Fifth District), which passed unanimously, anti-Semitism, Holocaust Denial, and the restriction of freedom of the press in the Arab media are tackled (H. Res. 1127). The resolution acknowledges that this has led to a very difficult situation when it comes to working towards peace in the Israel-Arab conflict.

The only information that is available at this time was that the 5 suspects were black, ranging from 6-30, and used steel pipes to beat up this person.

I decided it was time I put some of my thoughts in writing this Op-Ed for the "paper" and I decided on a good topic. I know someone out there can properly answer the following question; however, the amount of evidence against the Palestinian people is mind boggling. Just exactly, who are these Palestinian people? Let us examine the evidence that points me to asking this question.

First, there is a huge gap from 1273 BCE with the Jewish people's conquest of Israel and 636 ACE when the "Armies of Allah" invaded and conquered the land of Israel. One of the many claims by supporters of the Palestinian people is that they have always lived in the land of, what they call, Palestine. However, between those periods the Jewish Kingdom rose and fell; however, the Jewish population in Israel, mostly centralized around major Jewish cities such as Jerusalem was a constant between then and until the founding of the modern Jewish State. How did the Palestinian people get the term "Palestine" from? It comes from a renaming of Israel at the hands of the Romans. They decided after defeating the Jewish nation, they would rename it after the sworn enemies of the Jewish people, the Philistines, hence they called it "Philistine." However, even then there has never been any kind of rule from these Palestinian people. From the time of the Romans until the British left the "Mandate of Palestine" there was no kingdom or leadership in part of the Palestinian people; however, when Theodore Herzl reminded the Jewish people that we do have a homeland and that we should go back to our homeland, it was then that the uprising against the Jewish people started and the claims of a "Palestinian People" were born.

Jewish Nationalism and Zionism

The following is a term paper I wrote for a Middle East Politics Class. I was able to get an A- in the class, so the paper must've been somewhat good. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!

Zionism, in certain parts of the world, is a dirty word that people associate colonialism, hatred, and racism to name a few. On December 10, 1975, the United Nations, an organization that created the State of Israel as a “Jewish State,” declared that “that Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination.^¹” Claims like this from the UN, the Arab world, and other various groups are false representations of the movement of Zionism. Zionism is the Jewish national movement for a Jewish homeland. In order to understand the Zionist movement as we know it today, we need to look back at the founder of the modern Zionist movement, Theodore Herzl. Herzl's idea has come under attack from Jewish thinkers themselves and we shall look at what they say; however, something we need to look at before is that we need to look at who Herzl was and what influenced him in his thinking.

The Jewish people that have been around for about 3,000 years^². Throughout the history of the Jewish people they have been the target of various forms of Jewish hatred, or anti-Semitism. This form of hatred is something that caused a reaction in a reporter named Theodore Herzl covering the case of Alfred Dreyfuss in what is known today as the Dreyfuss Affair^³. In 1894, Alfred Dreyfuss was accused of sending information to the German embassy. Through the streets of France, Herzl, himself a secular Jew, heard anti-Semitic chanting by the citizens of France. However, this was not the first time Herzl has experienced this type of hate. At the age of 15, according to a biography based on the work of Alex Bein, when his teacher defined the word “heathen,” he said “'such as idolaters, Mohammedians, and Jews.'” This event played a role in removal from this school. When he was 18, after the sudden death of his sister, his family moved to Vienna. Here, he enrolled in law school and once again found more anti-Semitism. He read the book The Jewish Problem as a Problem of Race, Morals and Culture by Eugen Duhrings. This book said that the “Jewish Race” has no worth whatsoever. Even Herzl's own fraternity had taken part in an anti-Semitic demonstration. He withdrew himself from the fraternity. In his writings, he notes that “[Duhring's book can unite] so much undeniable intelligence with so much universality of knowledge, can write like this, what are we to expect from the masses?” (26).

The event of the Dreyfuss Affair, finally lit the fire in him that led to his writing of a pamphlet that has changed the course of how Nationalism, the Middle East, and political thought. That pamphlet is The Jewish State. In this pamphlet, Herzl argues for the creation of a Jewish State because of the rise of anti-Semitism. He writes that he believes he understand anti-Semitism but that we cannot live in peace, as much as the world tries to tell us that we should believe it and rely on our host country for help. He says this because, since we are in the Ghettos but relied on a lot for finance services, the upper class has to deal with the pogroms that have been going on against us, the lower class has to suffer, and the middle class has to deal with proclamations against their stores that say to not buy from Jews. He therefore concludes that, no matter how hard we try, even if we were to assimilate into our surrounding or separate us from the rest of the world, we will still be hated and hostilities against Jews would still go on. Therefore, he concludes that we need to create a Jewish State. He offers two places for this state to take place, either Argentina or ) (the territory known as) Palestine because “it is our ever memorable historic home. The very name of Palestine would attract our people with a force of marvelous potency” (96). He then continues that the other religions holy sites would be protected and proposes a possibility of some agreement between the Sultan that controlled the land and the Jewish people so that way they would allow this state to created. He then continues with his thesis and proposes how the state will run, which institutions should be created and what they should do.

In an essay titled “People and Land of Israel” by Abraham S. Halkin^⁴,he writes that after the Jews were freed from the ghettos, he says that, if anything this increased the number and created a different type of anti-Semitism. He says that “anti-Semitism is an ineradicable disease, an inescapable concomitant of Jewish and non-Jewish co-existence” (32). He says that the only logical conclusion was that if they were “not to assimilate and eventually disappear into the general society, the only alternative was to emigrate to a land of their own” (33). He continues that Zionism was the answer to this problem and points out that Herzl was not really interested in settling in then Palestine but more concerned about getting a land (as shown by the Uganda situation, in which he felt Uganda would be the best choice right now as a place of refuge for the Jewish people). This is where Herzl and the Zionist Congress differed in that they made that they wanted the land to be where home has been for so long for the Jewish people, Israel. And, once again, the Zionist movement took a different turn than that of the Messianic movement which would lead to a return to Israel. The congress believed that, not God, but man would be responsible to make sure that this change would come about.

However, at the end of the day, we need to ask this about Zionism, what exactly is it and how does it constitute Nationalism, if at all? Based upon my readings I would conclude that Zionism is a form of nationalism that takes its roots in Perennialism. These group of theorists “accept that nationalism is modern, and that the nation itself has gone undergone significant changes in the modern period, but that the nation is continues with an older community, which may have an ethnic, linguistic, or cultural basis: nationhood can be 'forgotten' but it can also be 'recovered^⁵” (115). This applies to the Jewish people because we exhibit all of those characteristics. The Jewish people, from the time of the destruction of the second temple to the times today, have undergone a tremendous transformation into a nation with many different ways of thinking. There are now other strands of Judaism because of this thinking (Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist to name three), but we managed to keep certain traditions together. We may not all speak Hebrew but we all, to a large extent, know that is the main language that Jewish people pray. We all know of the concept of Shabbat, or Sabbath as the Jewish day of rest on Saturday, and various other customs were kept throughout the diaspora no matter what Jewish way of thinking, we managed to keep all of this together. What Herzl essentially was doing was reminding us we are a nation and, with the ideas of nationalism still alive among other people, we were reminded that we are a people and that now is the time to create a state.

So who are the Jewish people as a nation, or are Jewish people even a nation? When I first looked at these various definitions, it occurred to me why this topic of arouses so much passion, mainly because depending on who you asked, you would get different answers. If one were to ask Otto Bauer, a political thinker, what who he sees as a nation, he defines it as “the totality of people who are united by a common fate so that they possess a common (national) character. The common fate is... primarily a common history; the common national character involves almost necessarily a uniformity of language” (264). How is this to be connected with Zionism? Zionism, as mentioned before, is a modern form of Jewish Nationalism. Now, one of the key components of any nationalist movement, as Montserrat Guibernau defines nationalism, is there is a “sentiment of belonging to a community whose members identify with a set of symbols, beliefs and ways of life and have the will to decide upon their common destiny” (266). Therefore, in many words, based upon these two definitions, the Jews are a nation and, especially post-Herzl, that the Jews have a right to a national home land. How so?

The Jewish people, after the destruction of the Jewish temple and Israel was conquered by the Roman's in 135 ACE, Yaakov Lozowick notes something interesting happen after the destruction. He says “Afterwards, the survivors turned themselves into something quite unusual: a national community without the geographic or political trappings of a nation” (40) He continues with this his description of this unique nation that this gave the Jewish people a type of longevity that most other nations, including the Romans, did not have. He notes that this unlikely survival strategy created a common culture among the Jewish people. He notes that this community would be based primarily on religion. The Torah, the holy book for the Jewish people, gives an outline how to live, act, behave, educate, etc. This new culture, although the Torah expounds on the proper type of warfare, this was not necessary after the destruction of the Jewish state. Overall, Lozowick notes that “the Jewish way of life was common to Jews wherever they were, so ultimately a Jew felt at home,” and “what had once been a nation on its land with a common religion had evolved into a religion that was persevering a nation – in very unusual conditions” (41).

What we have just explored helps define the Jewish people as a nation. They have a common culture that they can point too, a common language that they could use (Hebrew at first, then other languages came in, but Hebrew continued to be a part of a Jew's life) and, through Guibernau, we have the set of symbols, beliefs and ways of life. The only thing that was missing was the will to decide upon their own destiny. What ensued would be a debate regarding what should be done with the Jews. Herzl stated that the Jews should create a Jewish state in Palestine; however, not all Jews were willing to buy into this debate. One such Jewish individual (but he would never say he himself was a Jew) is Karl Marx.

Karl Marx is the author of the famous Communist Manifesto and his ideas have helped shaped Eastern Europe and influenced world leaders as well as political theory. In one of his essay's “On the Jewish Question^⁷,” he provides how one Jewish thinker responds for the cry for emancipation. Overall, what he is saying to the Jewish people in this essay is that in order to be emancipated from Judaism. He basically says that Jews are different because we ourselves make ourselves different and that the only way we shall be given equal rights is if we abandon our religion, because religion is what pushes us down from freedom.

Another Jewish thinker discussed in an essay about “Progressive” Jewish thought^⁸ is Jacqueline Rose and her book The Question of Zion. One of the main points of this book is he thinking in what led to the thinking of Herzl. She, according to the essay, makes a connection between him and Shabbatai Zvi, a seventh century “messianic pretender and apostate from Judaism (to Islam)” (9). She feels that the connection between the two individuals is that she feels what led these two was the idea of Jewish messaianism, which she equates with madness. Her thought on Zionism as a form of messianic thinking is, and he quotes her, saying “'we take Zionism to be a form of collective insanity. (p. 17)'” (10).

Another Jewish thinker is Tony Judt, who calls Israel “everything from arrogant, aggressive, anachronistic, and infantile to dysfunctional, immoral, and a primary cause of present-day anti-Semitism” (15). He writes in an article that appeared in the New York Times Review of Books on October 23, 2003, in an article titled “Israel: The Alternative,” says that “Israel today is bad for the Jews” (15). He solution to this is to create “a single, integrated, bi national state for the Jews and Arabs” (15). Another Orthodox religious group of Jews called the Neturai Karta^⁹ says that the state should be abolished because it is against the Torah and the messiah hasn't come, therefore it is sacrilegious to do such a thing.

Uri Avneri, an Israeli critic, says regarding Jewish Nationalism today that “For generations the Jews were persecuted in many countries and developed the consciousness of victims. It could almost have been said that most of the Jewish culture created during the last two or three centuries revolves around this axis” (Lozowick 42). According to this, Jewish identity is based lately on the idea of victim hood and many others, including Norman Finkelstein say this, that we have played this up in order for the creation of the state of Israel to take place. Finkelstein, in particular plays up how Israel has played it up. He says in his book The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering, he says “Given its proven utility, organized American Jewry exploited the Nazi Holocaust” and that the Holocaust “proved to be the perfect weapon for deflecting criticism of Israel” (30). According to both of these men, with Uri being an Israeli and Finkelstein being a Jewish individual (whose mother is a Holocaust survivor) says that Jewish people exploit their victim hood so that was we cannot take any blame from anyone for anything actions Israel takes.

This is very disturbing on many different levels. The first level being educational. Such thinking about the Jewish people as exploiting tragedy for personal gain is disturbingly familiar to claims made against the Jews as exploiters is disturbing in feeding into false libels against the Jews. Second, on a historical level. Yes it is true that Jews have had a very rough history (to put it lightly), but from my understanding of history, other groups have had similar histories. Were not the Indians, when the colonists arrived in America, came under attack from various sicknesses as well as other bloody incidents? Did we forget the massacre at Wounded Knee? How about the Armenians and the massacres that took place? Finally, on a personal level this disturbs me. When Jewish people talk about the Holocaust it is not about deflecting blame for actions Israel takes where criticism is due, but because of the circumstances surrounding it. While it is true other minorities were targeted in the Holocaust (Roma/Gypsies and Homosexuals to name to groups targeted) what makes the Jewish extermination during the Holocaust unique (and this I learned during my time in Hebrew school) is the amount of planning and precision and amount of time the Nazi's gave to the extermination of the Jewish people is something that is startling.

Another way that this is disturbing is that it seems that they are basing Jewish/Zionist ideology as something that emerged mainly after the Holocaust. First, a general definition of the term “ideology.” Ideology, as defined in Terry Eagelton's Ideology. In this essay, he gives six different ways to define ideology. In terms of Zionism as a political thought, there are three that fit. His first definition of ideology is “the whole complex of signifying practices and symbolic process in a particular society” (28). The second definition that fits is, he says, “turns on ideas and beliefs (whether true or false) which symbolize the conditions and life experiences of a specific, socially significant group or class” (29). The third definition fits which, he says ideology is “the promotion and legitimation of the interests of such social groups in the face of opposing interests.”

These three fit into Zionism in the following way. The first is, does this ideology of Zionism have practices and symbolic processes that are part of a society? The answer, as mentioned before, is yes. The Jewish people have common practices that we all do that almost all Jewish people know (prayer, going to synagogue/temple, religious holidays and holy days to name a few). In terms of the symbolic, we have Bar/Bat Mitzvah's (Jewish ritual of right of passage into Manhood or Womanhood) and the Jewish Star of David known throughout the Jewish world and the world in general as one of the big symbols of Judaism. The second definition fits because we have turned in our history to various leaders within the Jewish communities for guidence in difficult situations. Whether it was the Holocaust, the expulsion of Jews from Spain during the Inquisition, or even a disputation between Christianity and Judaism^¹0, we have always turned to our leaders and to the Torah for guidance during difficult times. In terms of Zionism, Herzl just returned to, as he says Zionism is “a very old idea” (69) as a response to the rise of anti-Semitism and pogroms (attacks on Jews, sometimes organized, other times it is a sudden event that happens) going on in Europe. The third definition fits Zionism, and is something that is still having to be defended. This idea was first promoted and led to the creation of the Zionist Congress that declared its intentions to “create for the Jewish people a home in Palestine by Public Law” (Laqueur, Rubin 9). This idea has been debated back and forth; however, it is undisputed that this idea was promoted in an attempt to legitimize the movement.

However, after all that has been said about Zionism and nationalism as well as Zionism as Jewish nationalism, the main question that should be answered is what do I believe, is Zionism a form of Jewish nationalism? Before I address my views on all of this, I wish to respond to those Jewish critics about Zionism and Israel. In my mind, there is only one thing that can bind all of these things together, and that is the level of emotions outweighed over the facts themselves. One of the many things I have read (and have had various discussions with those Jewish individuals who describe themselves as “anti-Zionist”) is that Zionism is evil, makes no sense, and is against the, at the very least, the holy text of the Jewish people who adhere to it (this depends on which stream of Judaism the individual decides is the correct one, with each stream giving its own interpretation of the Torah); however, there are some things within Judaism that, at the very least, almost all streams agree on. For example, I have yet to find a Jewish group that says the ten commandments are something that is open to interpretation.

One of the big ideas within Judaism is the concept of “Tikun Olam.” This Jewish teaching is, according to the literal translation, of “repairing the world.” From my mind, individuals such as Finkelstein, Chomsky, and the others from what I believe is trying to adhere to this concept. I am basing this on the fact they these individuals attempt to be the protectors of the Palestinian people because they are, as they claim, are victims by people who have been victims their entire history (the Jewish people). The problem with this though, as I have mentioned above, is the mentioning of emotions over the facts. When discussing the plight of the Jews who were, in essence, kicked out of the Arab lands shortly after the State of Israel was created^¹1, I sought out and quoted documents, conversations I heard from various Muslims and Arabs who believe in Israel's right to exist, and talked about Jewish history in Israel. The general response from various respected political thinkers down to a regular person is the stressing on how terrible Zionism is and how it promotes hatred of others. Based on my reading, this is not the case with Zionism. If anything, this idea is peaceful and simply asks the other nations to not hate them. Basically we'll take care of ourselves and you'll have nothing to worry about. It is a movement that simply asks their right to reclaim a land that was taken away from them a long time ago and to return to it. Zionism does not ask for land, but for simply letting us back into Israel to live in it. Over time this idea has adapted (as other ideas do) to mean the creation and protection of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

This was not like when the European countries divided up the remaining lands of the Ottoman empire. This was just a proclamation of a return to our historical land. What makes the Jews a people? We have a common history, a common culture, and a common religion (followed by various degrees). This modern form of Jewish nationalism was formed not by any European entity but by a people who have managed to keep themselves together over time in a way not many other groups on the planet can say they have. That movement was Zionism.

Urban Outfitters promotes Hate!

Browsing Facebook recently, I came upon a post from a friend that was truely disturbing. Urban Outfitters, a clothing company thats sells clothing aimed at young adults, has started selling this T-shirt with a disturbing set of pictures in the front. If you feel as strongly about this as I do, please go to my friend's facebook group page calling for a boycott of this company.

Here is a open letter that you could feel free to copy and paste and send to the company:

To Whom it May Concern,
I am someone who is always trying to keep up with the current fashion styles and your store is one of the many places I go to to keep up with the latest fashion; however, I recently came upon a shirt that will make me think twice when it comes to shopping at your store. This shirt, (http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp;jsessionid=A0CD8C1F694904FC5F7EDECAB013FAB7.app13-node1?itemdescription=true&itemCount=10&id=14598635&parentid=M_APP_TEESSHORT&sortProperties=%20product.marketingPriority,-product.startDate&navCount=399&navAction=poppushpush&color=10) when I came upon it was shocked and angered, but not at the message it was trying to get across.

Other than Urban Outfitter's lack of the knowledge of the Middle East conflict, your shirt portrays that these children are victims; however, when you put the gun in the hands of a child you make it appear that the child has a right, as a "victim," to pick up a weapon and kill. This type of message your putting across is something only put forward in the mosques where Imam's preach hatred towards Israel and the Jewish people as well as through public Palestinian TV where children are taught to hate and kill innocent civilians. This is the message you put across in this shirt and I want to let you know I do not plan on shopping at your store again and will let all of my friends and family know not to shop their because of Urban Outfitter's decision to promote a cause that calls for death of innocent people.

Australian Liberal party leader resigns after calling a candidate a "Greedy Jew."

According to ABC News Australia, The Victorian Liberals Party, a political party in Australia, has forced the resignation of a senior official for calling a candidate a "greedy Jew."

The party made the right call; however, we see here once again the stereotypical answer of an anti-Semite who refuses to admit their own hate. Thoughts on former President Jimmy Carter's book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid"

With former President Jimmy Carter being in the news recently, I thought this would be a good time to release my report about Jimmy Carter's book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid."

Over the course of two weeks in January, I had the chance to get a copy of the book (from the Bargain bin at a B. Dalton Bookstore at Union Station in Washington, DC). I decided to read it because of the heavy criticism this book has received regarding his depiction of Jews, Zionists, and Israeli's, essentially claiming they are the reason that peace has not been achieved.

The book itself is an easy and light read and is very thought provoking, but for all the wrong reasons.

The book makes one defense for Israel, in that he says that Israel's security must be guarenteed; however, that is all he says to "defend" Israel. He makes claims that Israel has not done anything to work towards a lasting peace with the Palestinians, a false claim. He also makes the claim of a "cycle of violence" where there really is no cycle. The only "cycle" is that of Palestinian terrorists blowing themselves up in public areas, killing innocent men, women, and children and Israel responds by either killing a high ranking terrorist in Hamas and/or destroying the home that the terrorist lived in. He also feels that Israel must comply with various resolutions and agreements, such as the U.N. resolutions and Oslo Agreements of 1993. The problem with this claim, as shown in various books ("Nations United: How the United Nations Undermines Israel and the West") and by looking at the original resolutions (UN Resolution 242 being the big one), among other ways (films such as "Relentless: The Struggle for Peace in the Middle East" being one example) show that Israel has been complying with international agreements. Also, that because the Palestinians voted Hamas into power in 2006 that the United States, Israel, and other countries are depriving the Palestinians of a working economy and better living conditions. A look at this "elected" party, Hamas, shows that they are not a political entity, but a terrorist organization. This is clearly best shown in the Hamas Charter when they say, "our struggle against the Jews is extremely wide-ranging and grave, so much so that it will need all the loyal efforts we can wield, to be followed by further steps and reinforced by successive battalions from the multifarious Arab and Islamic world, until the enemies are defeated and Allah’s victory prevails." The biggest claim is that the security fence is really an "Apartheid Wall" meant to separate Palestinian from Palestinian. The truth is that this "wall" is really a fence meant to separate Palestinian terrorists from Israel.

In the end, while the former President may not have had it in mind, his work comes across anti-Semitic, saying that the Jews and Israelis as the biggest obstacle to peace.

Classic Self-Hating Anti-Semitism in the Guardian

In this article, Seth Freedman, a commentator for Guardian, and former IDF soldier, shows us the worst form of anti-Semitism, the "self-hating Jew." Yes, he does say that he is anything but this category of anti-Semitism; however, his words paint a different picture. The main push of the article is that Zionism and Judaism are two separate entities and that Zionism itself is evil. He claims that Zionism is a "a racist, supremacist ideology." He also discusses some conversations he had with Palestinians in refugee areas, a man named Jihad said to him '"There is no other way [that will suffice]. A two-state solution will not bring peace - the fight will go on."' This person also does not have a problem "with those who chose to join the armed resistance." Another Palestinian told him why couldn't the Zionists (in which this person really meant Jews) feel they need to not only emigrate, but to control and conquest the land? Essentially, this article is meant to portray the majority of Jews (in which Zionism and Judaism are essentially one in the same) as the worst thing in the region and that the Zionists are colonialists and imperialists who are guilty of crimes against humanity.

Anti-Zionist Statements Exemplify "Ethnic Tensions"

The Assemblyman, Javier Genao’s statement is just another example of ethnic division on our campus, which for the past two years seems to be a one-way street toward Jewish students. Many may not recognize the linkage between this statement regarding Zionism and anti-Jewish sentiment on campus. So a short Jewish history lesson is in order:

Modern Zionism, as a political movement, begins officially with Theodore Herzl’s essay “The Jewish State” and his convening of the first World Zionist Congress. Herzl, an assimilated and secular Jew, was awakened to his Jewish identity while covering, as a journalist, the Dreyfus affair, in which a clearly innocent Jewish man, Alfred Dreyfus, was tried and convicted for passing military secrets.

The incident was driven by anti-Semitism. In the east, in Russia, anti-Semitic mobs formed and massacred Jews in Ghettos. Zionism – the idea that the Jews should be returned to their ancestral homeland where they can have their own state, was the solution to the Jewish problem of anti-Semitism.

Thus is not surprising that on many campuses and universities anti-Zionist rallies often turn anti-Semitic. Nor does it come as a shock that Palestinian terrorists often aim to kill Jews anywhere in the world, and are taught to kill Jews, rather than to just resist what they call “the occupation.”

Second, a campus history lesson is in order. In the past few years Jews on this campus have been painted negatively – as racists, rich, exclusionary, and as only caring about other Jewish - whether in regards to Jewish students in PHD or Jewish students involved in Jewish clubs. Here are just a few examples:

• On May 3 2004, The Kingsman, a student newspaper, reported that USL members told a student that PHD was “just for Jews” during elections.

• On April 28, 2004, a member of USL, named Saba Gilani (USL) accused Daniel Tauber (PHD) of racial profiling when he campaigned, even though Tauber had campaigned to her, a Muslim wearing a head covering, the day, before not knowing she was a USL member.

• After learning that a voter had voted for PHD, Gilani, a USL member, asked the voter, “Why would you vote for a bunch of kikes?”

• On September 6, 2004, The Kingsman printed a story in which a pro-USL student accuses PHD of having a “Jewish Agenda.”

• In February 2004, Robert Ramos (USL) called Yehuda Katz’s political platform a “racist political agenda” in response to a letter by Katz addressing USL’s repeated allegations that PHD was “a bunch of rich, white, Jews.”

• In Spring 2003, The Kingsman editorialized that PHD was racial profiling in its campaigning.

• In April 2003, Yehuda Katz (PHD) and Delano Aaron (USL) were campaigning to a group of African Americans. Aaron told to the group that “the Jews are taking over the school” and stated that a vote for PHD meant a vote for Jews taking over the school.

• In April 2002, USL members renamed Chuck Chigewe, PHD’s Black candidate for Vice President, to Chick Chigewitz, to make his name more Jewish sounding.
• In November 1999, Omar Killingbeck, a USL member wrote that Birthright Israel was racist.

• The November 8, 2004 editorial in The Kingsman entitled “A Sensitive Topic” discussed racial division on campus read, “to take this a step further, you can clearly see a division of these clubs here on campus: the majority of clubs are in the Barn; while certainly ethnically exclusive clubs are housed right as you enter campus. Is that fair? We don’t think so.” The majority of clubs refers to clubs like the Black Student Union, the Islamic Society, the Carribean Student Union, who have are badly situated in “the barn,” while the “certain ethnically exclusive clubs housed right as you enter campus” refers to Hillel and other Jewish clubs who are housed by a campus entrance on Campus Road off of Nostrand Avenue.

• While at the computer lab, a student who frequents Hillel, noticed that waiting to be printed was a word document entitled “F--- the Yahood.”

From reading the November 8, 2004 Kingsman editorial, we can see that everyone seems to understand that there is some sort of ethnic division on campus. But while no one can deny that in any group there are racists, I have not seen an upsurge of racism among Jewish students, nor have we witnessed members of PHD stereotyping Muslims or Blacks in USL, in flyers and opinion articles in order to win student government elections.

However, a huge amount of negative feeling is being generated towards Jews, especially by USL members. The problem is not simply an ethnic division on our campus. It is specifically the negative stereotyping of Jews, many times for political gain, but many times in addressing a variety of issues as well. This is known as anti-Semitism.

If people are serious about mending the divisions on campus, they are going to have to look deep within themselves and ask whether they are being as sensitive to the issues of the Jewish minority as well as other minorities.

People must come to understand that for every Jew, in one way or another, the existence of the State of Israel, as a political issue is the equivalent of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or even the Fourteenth Amendment, because it means that they no longer have to fear anti-Semitism, because they will always have a refuge.

Even if one does not believe that they hate Jews, they must still strive for sensitivity regarding Jewish issues like Israel and anti-Semitic stereotypes. For it was not with a bloody hatred, but with negative stereotypes that students were told not to vote – and in the end did not vote for the bunch of rich Jews in PHD.

South Korean Commercials with Nazi Symbols

In a report by CNN.com, a South Korean cosmetics company, Coreana Cosmetics Co., has put out an ad campaign for one of its products that uses Nazi symbolism in the ads. Did the costume designer who was responsible do this on purpose using the Nazi symbols in their ads (one of them is the Nazi's eagle symbol)? The answer is yes! "Seo Sang-hee, confirmed the ad was meant to invoke a Nazi soldier and Hitler, which she said symbolize "revolution" in keeping with the lotion's "revolutionary" dual functions. Seo said the commercial was not designed to promote Hitler, but rather the idea that the cosmetics will succeed in both East and West, which Hitler failed to do."

More Hate Found on Brooklyn College Campus

Two weeks ago, I made the discovery of hate on our campus. Today, sources led me to another bathroom stall in Brooklyn College showing the worst symbols of hate.

This graffiti says "Cripples to the Lions." The upside-down "T" infers to the upside-down cross, a sign of the devil as well as the "O's" which is the Pentagram, an old sign of the devil.

This graffiti says "Male Supremacy." The "A" symbolism is unknown to me.

This picture has the "Star of David" enclosed in a circle and in the middle of the star is a Swastika and the number "6" a common sign of evil enclosed within the circle. On the top of the circle says "Die" and on the bottom says "Gays."

Justice for Jewish Refugees!

Yesterday, as reported by Ha'aretz (an Israeli Newspaper), the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that will help reshape the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis/Jewish people. The bill, H. Res. 185, sponsored by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) essentially states that "any comprehensive Middle East peace agreement must resolve all outstanding issues relating to the legitimate rights of all refugees in the Middle East, including Jews, Christians, and other displaced populations." The group Justice for Jews from Arab Countries helped provide the research that provides evidence that there are over 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries who, essentially, threw them out because of the creation of Israel.

Finally, justice will be done to these forgotten refugees; however, the fight is not over. The U.N. at this time does not count these Jews as refugees following the War of Independence in 1948. Only recently did a refugee come speak to the United Nations, according to The Canadian Jewish News! Therefore, it is imperative that those of you who live outside of the United States call your local government officials and urge them to pass a bill similar to H. Res. 185! According to Canada.com, that is what is exactly being worked on in Canada.

Report to Congress finds Anti-Semitism on the rise around the World

According to CNN.com, a report titled "Contemporary Global Anti-Semitism," was given to Congress, detailing information about the rise of Anti-Semitism around the world. It talks about conspiracy theories concerning Jews, Holocaust denial, anti-Zionism and the demonization of Israel. It also discussed physical attacks against Jews, property damage, and desecration of cemeteries.

Swastika found in Brooklyn College

I am currently a student at Brooklyn College. Yesterday in one of the bathrooms, I was shocked to discover three Swastikas on the walls of one of the stalls. I was so shocked that I alerted a professor to the discovery and he confirmed that those were swastikas. I alerted security and the officer told me "I have been doing this for fifteen years and I have never seen this before." I alerted the Dean of Undergraduate Studies as well as the President of the University about this horrible discovery. The Dean personally called me back to apologize to me about what had happened and that they would be taken down immediately.
Before they cleaned up the stall, I took pictures of the swastikas on my cellphone.

Anti-Semitic graffiti found sprayed in cargo part of El Al Plane

According to Ynetnews.com, an El-Al Plane flying from Israel to Italy was found to have Arabic graffiti sprawled in the cargo part of the play. According to the report, they wrote "Death to Jews" and another report from Reuters says they wrote "Long Live Palestine."

No explosives were found on the plane.

I would venture a guess both were written as of the information right now; however, this is still a horrible thing to have occurred.

When will the world learn that the Muslim Extremists are anti-Semitic and want to kill Jews whether in Israel or in any country around the world?

A historical marker is erected in Georgia to remember an Jewish man who was lynched

According to 13wmaz.com, a historical marker was erected in Georgia to mark the spot where Leo Frank, a Jewish businessman, was lynched.

In 1913, Leo Frank was found guilty of killing a 13 year old Mary Phagan; however, the state of Georgia writes in the marker says the verdict was "controversial [and was] fueled by societal tensions and anti-Semitism."

In 1915 he was kidnapped from the prison, taken to Marietta, and hanged.

The marker states further states "Without addressing guilt or innocence, and in recognition of the state's failure to either protect Frank or bring
his killers to justice, he was granted a posthumous pardon in 1986."
